How are Lab Created Diamonds Made?

How are lab grown diamonds grown?

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds—just like natural ones—but created above ground using advanced technology. At Nova Born, we believe in combining science, beauty, and sustainability. Our diamonds are ethically grown in labs using methods that mimic the way natural diamonds form deep within the Earth—minus the mining.

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds — just created above ground. Using advanced technology, we simulate the natural process by which diamonds form, but in a matter of weeks instead of millennia.

In a high-tech lab in Singapore, tiny diamond "seeds" are placed in a plasma chamber. Using a method called Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), carbon-rich gases break down and deposit layers of pure carbon onto each seed. Over 10–12 weeks, these layers build into rough diamonds, which are then cut and polished just like mined ones.

Lab-grown diamonds are physically, chemically, and optically identical to mined diamonds — but they offer a modern, ethical alternative that today’s consumers love. Eco-friendly, conflict-free, and every bit as brilliant.

The Two Main Methods: HPHT & CVD

We work with world-class laboratories that use two state-of-the-art techniques to grow our diamonds: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). Here's how they work:

High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT)

The HPHT method was developed to recreate the extreme conditions found deep inside the Earth’s mantle, where natural diamonds form over billions of years.

How it works:

  • A tiny diamond seed is placed into a growth chamber with pure carbon.
  • The chamber is subjected to intense pressure (over 1.5 million pounds per square inch) and high temperatures (over 2,000°C).
  • Under these conditions, the carbon melts and crystallizes around the seed, slowly forming a diamond over a few weeks.
  • As the diamond grows, it takes on the same crystal structure and composition as a natural diamond.

HPHT is especially effective in creating larger, high-quality diamonds and can also be used to improve the color and clarity of diamonds.

Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)

CVD is a more modern and energy-efficient process that allows for precise control over the diamond’s growth environment.

How it works:

  • A thin slice of diamond seed is placed in a sealed chamber.
  • The chamber is filled with carbon-rich gases, like methane, and heated to around 800°C.
  • Microwaves or lasers are used to ionize the gases, turning them into plasma.
  • Carbon atoms break apart and begin to settle on the diamond seed, bonding layer by layer to grow a full diamond crystal.

CVD diamonds tend to be purer because the growth process happens in a cleaner environment with fewer impurities. This method also allows for better control over size, color, and clarity.
